STOCK MARKET SNAPSHOT - WEEK 07

The gains accumulated in the GSE All Share Index (GSE-I) within the past two weeks were severed in the week ended 12th February, 2010. This was largely impacted by declines in large and mid capitalized stocks like ETI, SG-SSB, PBC and EIC which offset gains in six other mid capitalized stocks. The increase in price and volumes activity was expected as investors activity gradually increases on the Accra bourse. The GSE-I recorded a net loss of 35.66pts (-0.63%) within the week under review to close at 5,613.25pts after touching a nine day trading low of 5,592.70pts on Wednesday. This brought the YTD change of the GSE-I down to +0.73% as at weekend, from a high of +1.37% recorded a week earlier.

Market index swings was characterized by seven gainers and four losers. Stocks in the Banking, Insurance, Non-banking, Breweries, Trading and Distribution and Food sectors moved the market.

On the gaining side, FML led the team with a 12.21% (74 pesewas) appreciation in price to close at GH¢6.80, its highest close since IPO. The stock of the ice cream maker has so far made a capital gain of 22.52%. Following closely was UTF, which surged with 8.70% (2 pesewas) to close at GH¢0.25. EBG, GCB and SCB were the next, recording a gain of 6.53% (18 pesewas), 4.11% (3 pesewas) and 1.02% (31pesewas) to close at GH¢3.10 GH¢0.76 and GH¢30.66 respectively. GGBL regained the 1 pesewa it lost the previous week to close at GH¢1.34, despite touching a low of GH¢1.32 on Tuesday.

On the losing stream, ETI- the second most capitalized stock on the Accra bourse led the drag with a 6.67% (1 pesewa) decline in value to close at GH¢0.14. SG-SSB lost the 3 pesewas it gained the previous week to close at its year open value of GH¢0.45, recording a decline of 6.25% on the week. PBC and EIC added to the list of losers with a loss of 5.56% (1 pesewa) and 1.36% (3 pesewas) to close at GH¢0.17 and GH¢2.17 respectively.

Total volume traded for the week was 1,453,694 representing a 32.95% increase over the previous week’s 1,093,443. Total value traded was GH¢ 1,497,007.31 representing an increase of 82.52% over the previous week’s 820,169.62. All other share prices remained stable.

GOIL closed the week at GH¢ 0.21 per share with a total of 1700 shares being traded.
